What's Somatic Coaching

Soma

Soma means body.

Not the body as an object —
but the body as lived experience.

Leadership patterns don’t begin in thought.
They begin in posture, breath, tone, timing, contraction, urgency.

Under stress, the nervous system leads.
The body takes the fastest path — usually what is most practiced.

By the time you can think about how you want to respond,
the old pattern has already begun.

Somatic leadership coaching works at the level where leadership patterns are encoded — in the nervous system.

1. Somatic Awareness

Tracking the state you’re in.

Before change, there is noticing.

We learn to track subtle cues:

  • tightening in the chest

  • breath shortening

  • jaw clenching

  • leaning forward to control

  • pulling back to withdraw

These signals tell you:

  • what state you’re in

  • what pattern is forming

  • whether you’re regulated or reactive

The earlier you notice, the more choice you have.

Without awareness, patterns feel automatic.
With awareness, they become workable.

2. Somatic Resourcing

Building the capacity to stay present.

Change cannot happen in overwhelm.

We strengthen your nervous system’s ability to:

  • regulate under stress

  • widen attention

  • ground and stabilize

  • stay connected while activated

Resourcing increases flexibility.
It gives you range.

Without regulation, insight collapses under pressure.
With regulation, new responses can actually take root.

3. Somatic Exploration

Following what the body already knows.

The body often moves before language forms.

A spontaneous hand gesture.
A tightening that appears when you speak.
A shift in posture when discussing authority.

Instead of analyzing these, we explore them — staying with the sensation long enough for meaning to emerge from the body itself.

A small movement might reveal:

  • a boundary that wants to be expressed

  • power that has been held back

  • fear that hasn’t been acknowledged

  • clarity waiting beneath tension

Somatic exploration accesses knowing that cognitive insight alone cannot reach. It works with the fast, subcortical systems that organize habits, posture, tone, and reaction — long before conscious thought intervenes.

4. Somatic Practice

Installing new patterns.

Insight does not create change.
Repetition does.

Neurobiology shows you cannot think your way into a new pattern. New ways of being must be practiced under conditions similar to the ones that trigger them. Otherwise, the old pattern simply reasserts itself under pressure.

In sessions, we:

  • bring real leadership situations into the room

  • slow them down

  • practice small, precise shifts

  • repeat those shifts while regulated

Imagined and rehearsed experiences activate many of the same neural and autonomic circuits as real-life situations — at lower intensity.

That lower intensity is what allows rewiring.

It’s like a flight simulator for leadership.

You’re not talking about what you would do differently —
you’re training your system to respond differently before you’re in the air.

5. Somatic Coherence

Alignment between intention and embodiment.

Over time, repeated practice reorganizes the system.

The nervous system becomes more integrated.

New responses require less effort.
Old reactions lose intensity.

Somatic coherence is when:

  • your posture matches your conviction

  • your tone matches your authority

  • your boundaries match your values

  • your nervous system stays steady while you speak truth

  • your body is not subtly contradicting your intention

Over time, you don’t just understand how you want to lead —  you can have a different response when it matters.
